  • Study Made Easy

Hey Paul, you’re test prep worked great! I failed the Business and Finance test twice before, and bought test prep from two of your competitors, and neither of them came close to your step-by-step process for finding the answers in the books. It was a pain to study, but it made the tests almost seem easy! Again, thanks to you and to License to Pass for helping me get into the job I’ve always wanted – now I’m the boss!

  • 1 on 1 Study Help

Dear Paul and License to Pass. I was really surprised when I got confused studying and took you at your word and called you. I did not expect you to spend much time with me, but you made sure I understood the work, and told me to call back if I had more questions. I did! You answered again! I passed all three of the tests on my first try, and now I’m a residential contractor in Saint Petersburg! Thanks for all your help, and believing in me.

  • Accurate Florida Prep

When I called to ask how to become a General Contractor in Florida, already being one in Chicago, I was surprised at the amount of time you were willing to spend helping me understand the process. I had expected the tests to be about my knowledge of construction, and it would be an easy step in the process. You talked about how the test was about using the books, and understanding how the test writers keep the failure rate so high. I’m so glad I bought your test prep. Your dual focus on practicing in the books before the test, and managing myself in the test room during the test, really got me through the three exams. And like you said, my score got higher with each test.

Do’s & Don’ts

❌ Wrong Approach: Memorizing facts
✓ Right Approach: Navigate books under pressure

❌ Wrong Approach: Reading books cover-to-cover
✓ Right Approach: Practice finding answers with each book’s contents list and index

❌ Wrong Approach: Generic study materials
✓ Right Approach: Florida-specific prep aligned with actual exam content

The Florida contractor exams are open book, and that changes how you prepare. The exam does not reward what you memorized, it rewards how fast you find the right answer in the right book before the clock runs out. So when preparing for Florida contractor exam day, the single most important thing you own is the current board-approved reference set, plus the practice to find answers in it. A general contractor sits three parts, Business and Finance, Contract Administration, and Project Management, and passes each at 70 percent.

Florida Contractor Exams FAQ

Only the titles on the current DBPR approved reference list, and they must stay as published. For a general contractor that’s the Business and Finance references, the Contractors Manual and AIA documents for Contract Administration, and the Florida Building Code volumes plus OSHA and the trade references for Project Management. Confirm the exact current list on the DBPR site before you buy, because editions update.

Our bundles include the correct edition of every approved reference

There’s no official required number of study hours, so treat any timeline as a rough guide, not a rule. As a ballpark, plan on giving it a couple of months, and expect Business and Finance to take the biggest share, since it mixes accounting with law. But hours matter less than how you spend them: get the current board-approved books and drill timed practice until you can find any answer fast. That lookup speed is what passes you.

Yes, all three parts are open book. You bring the current board-approved reference books into the Pearson VUE test center and look up answers as you go. Open book doesn’t mean easy, though: it’s timed, so the real skill is finding the answer fast in the book.

Buy them. The exam references specific approved editions, so the right edition matters most. We sell new, current-edition books outright at the best prices, as bundles or individual titles, so you own the edition and keep it. We do not sell used books or rent them.

The state application and examination fee for a certification applicant is $335, set by Florida Administrative Code rule 61G4-12.009. The exam-sitting charges billed by the testing vendor are separate and can change, so confirm them with DBPR and Pearson VUE before you register.

Yes. Our Business and Finance combo bundle includes a full 120-question practice exam for the Florida Business and Finance examination, one of the three state construction exams, with an answer key and step-by-step explanations showing where each answer lives in the approved reference books. See the practice exam bundle →

License to Pass is an online store that sells the board-approved reference books and its own test prep for the three Florida General Contractor exams. The Florida General Contractor Exam Prep and Books Bundle costs $1,750 and includes the approved books for Business and Finance, Contract Administration and Project Management, plus the Essential Test Prep with a full practice exam for each. The books alone are $1,450 and the Essential Test Prep alone is $650. See the complete bundle

The most effective study materials are the current board-approved reference books plus timed practice exams, because the Florida contractor exams are open book and only books on the approved reference list may be brought into the test center. Timing matters as much as content: the Business and Finance exam has 120 questions in 6.5 hours, and the General Contractor Contract Administration and Project Management exams have 60 questions each in 4.5 hours. Compare the study materials

The DBPR doesn’t publish an official pass rate, so treat any percentage you see online as unverified. What’s consistent is this: most people who fail run out of time, not knowledge, because the exams are open book and timed. Buy the current board-approved books and practice finding answers in them under the clock, and your odds go up sharply.

You retake only the part you failed, your passing scores on the other parts stand. You have four years from your first attempt to finish all parts; after that, prior scores expire and you start over. So if you come up short on one part, regroup, drill that section’s books, and rebook it.

Yes. Florida sets experience routes for a general contractor, and you clear one: four years of experience with at least a year supervising, a relevant degree plus a year, or a foreman year plus college credits. Confirm the current routes and how to document them with the DBPR before you apply. Shoot us an email at info@licensetopass.com with specific questions.

Four years from your first attempt. You have to finish all parts within that window, or your earlier passing scores expire and you begin again. It’s the one clock worth watching if you’re taking the parts across several sittings.

Anyone who wants to run the business of contracting in Florida has to be certified or registered, and certification is by examination. If you want a Certified General Contractor license, with no limit on the work you take statewide, passing these is the way in. There’s no experience-only or grandfather route around it.

Florida offers several contractor license classifications. Each requires the Business & Finance exam plus trade-specific testing:

  • Certified General Contractor (CGC) – Unlimited scope for any construction project
  • Certified Building Contractor (CBC) – Commercial buildings, no single-family homes
  • Certified Residential Contractor (CRC) – Residential projects only
  • Specialty Licenses – Roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical (B&F exam + specialty exam)

Not sure which license you need?

For official licensing rules, the approved reference list and exam scheduling, go to the Florida DBPR at myfloridalicense.com and to Pearson VUE, which administers the contractor exams. For study resources, License to Pass sells the board-approved reference books and Essential Test Prep practice exams for self-study; it does not run classes or courses. To start a construction company in Florida, the business must operate through a qualifying agent who is a certified or registered contractor, per F.S. 489.119. Certification is by examination and lets you contract statewide, while registration covers only the local areas where you meet local licensing rules. The company’s license number must appear on every bid, contract and advertisement, and applicants attest to workers’ compensation, public liability and property damage insurance (F.S. 489.115(5)(a)). Read our Florida contractor license guide

To obtain a certified mechanical contractor license in Florida, you meet one of the experience routes in F.S. 489.111 and pass two state exams, Business and Finance and a trade-specific technical exam, each at 70% or better (Fla. Admin. Code 61G4-16.001). Business and Finance is the first exam for every contractor category, and License to Pass sells Business and Finance books and test prep. Check the DBPR approved reference list for your category and the current application steps before you apply. See the Business and Finance bundle
